Creation
Ayhoka came into being when Barbara gave in to her lifelong love of beach-combing and decided to get crafty. It didn’t take long for her to start creating all the things you will find on this site. Everything here is made with joy and love and is ready and waiting for someone to continue to love and cherish it for its beauty and uniqueness although they don't seem to be waiting around for too long
Ayhoka driftwood designs are created from items that are gathered from the Sefton coast beaches of Merseyside. If you visit a section of the Sefton coastline known locally as ‘the erosion’ you will find a bank of rubble. This was deposited there many years ago and after being pounded by innumerable, strong Mersey tides it has been reduced to smaller, smoother and quite intriguing shapes and pieces.
Endings and beginnings - two stories
There are two stories of how the rubble got to be where it is. One story tells of the rubble created by the bombing of houses and buildings in Liverpool during World War 2 being deposited here. The decision was made to bring it to this particular place to help slow down the natural erosion of the coastline. The other tells of local houses that collapsed as the sea claimed back the land that they were built on. Whatever the reason, each piece we collect holds its own mystery and unique story.
The piece you choose may include: driftwood that formed part of a doorway to another place; fragment of a boat claimed by the sea; sea-etched glass from windows that looked out onto a different world; slate that provided a ‘roof over our heads’; shells, pebbles and stones that made their own mysterious way to shore; branches that hid nests and provided shelter; as well as other wonderful items delivered to the beach by the tide.
Rebirth
Put together to create Ayhoka pieces these fragments of the past are reborn to live again as new objects - as unique and beautiful together as they are individually.
A labour of Love
We hope that you enjoy the Ayhoka creation you choose as much as I enjoy making it - from discovering and collecting treasures on the beach to putting each piece in place it is a true 'labour of love'.
